Sveti Petar u Šumi, which translates to 'Saint Peter in the Forest,' differs from typical Istrian hilltop towns. It is situated on a flat plateau and grew around the large Pauline monastery. The monastery's history dates back to the 12th century, originally founded by Benedictines before the Paulines took it over in the 15th century. The current Baroque appearance of the complex and the church of St. Peter and Paul is one of the most significant sacred monuments in Istria. A specially revered item in the monastery is the painting of Our Lady of Częstochowa, considered miraculous since the 18th century. However, the village is not just a spiritual center but also a mecca for lovers of traditional Istrian cuisine. The village is particularly famous for its meat products, especially Istrian sausages and prosciutto (pršut). Every year, the international fair 'With sausage to Europe' takes place here, attracting producers and foodies from across the region. The surroundings invite hiking and cycling through oak forests and vineyards. Due to its central location, Sveti Petar u Šumi is a convenient starting point for exploring both the west coast and the green hinterland of Istria.
