Povlja is located in a deep bay on the northeastern coast of Brač island. The settlement is one of the most historically significant on the island; it's where the 'Povaljska listina' was found, one of the oldest Croatian documents written in Cyrillic, dating back to 1184. The center is dominated by the imposing parish church built on the foundations of a 6th-century early Christian basilica, whose baptistery is still preserved today. The town is renowned for its excellent stonemasons who work with the famous white Brač stone. The bays around Povlja, such as Travna or Smokvica, offer crystal-clear water and tranquility away from the major tourist hubs. Povlja has been awarded several times as the most beautiful small tourist destination on the Adriatic. Local restaurants serve fresh fish, homemade olive oil, and the famous Brač roasted lamb. The ferry from Sumartin to Makarska is only a few kilometers away.
