Plomin Power Plant (Croatia)

Weather…

The Plomin Power Plant, situated in Istria County, is the only coal-fired power plant in Croatia and a cornerstone of the national electricity generation system. The facility consists of two units: Plomin 1, which was commissioned in 1970 and is currently out of operation, and Plomin 2, which has been operational since 2000. Plomin 2 features an installed capacity of 210 megawatts, covering approximately 7 to 10 percent of Croatia's total electricity demand. A standout feature of the plant is its 340-meter-high chimney, which is the tallest structure in Croatia and one of the tallest industrial chimneys in Europe. The plant utilizes imported hard coal, delivered via a dedicated maritime terminal in the Plomin Inlet. To comply with stringent European Union environmental standards, the facility has been retrofitted with modern desulfurization and nitrogen oxide reduction systems. Despite ongoing debates regarding decarbonization, the plant remains critical for the country's grid stability due to its reliable base-load power output.
