Perun (Croatia)

Weather…

Perun is a prominent mountain ridge in the southern part of the Mosor range in Dalmatia, rising above the coastal towns of Podstrana and Žrnovnica. The relief is named after the Slavic god of thunder, Perun, indicating the deep roots of pre-Christian mythology in this region. Geologically, the ridge is mainly composed of light-colored Mesozoic limestone, forming a rugged and barren karst landscape with numerous caves and stone fields. The ridge stretches for several kilometers parallel to the coast, reaching an elevation of 533 meters at its peak, Križ. Historically, Perun is seen as the setting for a symbolic battle between the sky god Perun and his adversary Veles, a theme reflected in local topography and place names. Along its slopes, prehistoric burial mounds and remains of Illyrian fortresses can be found, highlighting the strategic position overlooking the sea. The vegetation is typically Mediterranean, consisting of macchia, medicinal herbs like sage and rosemary, and scattered olive groves at lower elevations. Today, Perun is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers who appreciate the blend of historical trails and expansive views of Split and the island of Brač. Preserving this cultural and natural heritage is of great importance to the local identity of the Poljica region.
