Osor
Osor is a historic town located at the narrow strait separating the islands of Cres and Lošinj. Once a powerful maritime hub and a bishop's seat in Roman times, its significance was marked by the excavation of the Kavuada canal, which allowed ships to pass between the islands. A pivot bridge still operates there today, opening twice daily to let boats through. The entire town serves as an open-air gallery, with numerous bronze sculptures by prominent Croatian artists, including Ivan Meštrović, displayed along its stone-paved streets. The 15th-century Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary is the town's jewel, famous for its incredible acoustics and as the host of the prestigious Osor Musical Evenings festival. Visitors can explore the Archaeological Museum housed in the old Town Hall and the remains of ancient fortifications. The surrounding area gives several campsites and secluded coves well-suited for swimming in crystal-clear water. Osor is an essential stop for anyone traveling across the islands, offering a unique blend of ancient history and contemporary culture. Local restaurants are known for serving authentic island dishes, particularly seafood and game meat from the nearby Osoršćica mountain range.
