Knin Fortress (Croatia)

Weather…

The Knin Fortress is one of the largest and most significant military fortifications in Europe, perched atop Mount Spas overlooking the city of Knin. During the 11th century, it served as the capital and residence of Croatian kings, most notably King Dmitar Zvonimir, earning Knin the title 'City of Croatian Kings.' The fortress complex spans 470 meters in length and is divided into five interconnected parts, which were developed over centuries by Croatian, Hungarian, Venetian, Ottoman, and Austrian rulers. Due to its strategic location controlling the routes between the coast and the hinterland, it was historically known as the 'Key to Croatia.' Its massive stone walls, bastions, and bridges form a formidable defensive system that remains largely intact to this day. Currently, the fortress houses the Knin Museum, featuring archaeological and ethnographic collections, and stands as a powerful symbol of Croatian statehood and historical endurance.
