Jesenice, often called Krilo Jesenice, is a unique place on the Dalmatian coast. It is world-famous for its 'Salbunjeri', traditional wooden ships that were once used for sand excavation and now sail the Adriatic as luxury excursion vessels. The port of Krilo is the heart of the village, where you can admire these majestic ships lined up side by side. The settlement consists of several hamlets stretching from the pebbly beaches by the sea up to the old village (Staro Selo) on the slopes of Mount Mošnica. Old Jesenice features a fascinating glimpse into traditional stone architecture and a sweeping panoramic view of the islands of Brač and Šolta. A walk through the narrow streets reveals centuries-old churches and farmhouses. For beach lovers, Jesenice gives numerous small, cozy coves with crystal-clear water, good for snorkeling and relaxing. The proximity to Omiš also allows for adventures like rafting on the Cetina River or free climbing in the canyons. Local cuisine focuses on fresh fish and the region's famous olive oil, produced in the surrounding groves.

The day starts in the historic Staro Selo Jesenice, high above the coast. Wander through abandoned stone houses and visit the old Church of St. Nicholas. After a lunch featuring local specialties, head down to the harbor of Krilo, the hub of Croatian wooden shipbuilding. Spend the afternoon relaxing at Mutogras beach as the sun sets.
The morning in Jesenice starts with gentle rain, casting a mystical light over the old stone houses of Staro Selo. An umbrella is your best companion on the steep paths leading to St. Nicholas Church. At noon, the local konoba provides a cozy retreat. The scent of fresh fish and a crackling fireplace makes you forget the gray weather outside while you enjoy a warm meal. In the afternoon, the route leads down to Luka Krilo harbor. The wet pebbles at Mutogras beach glisten in the diffused light as waves rhythmically beat against the shore. The evening ends quietly. Even without a classic sunset, the view of the Adriatic offers a dramatic, melancholic backdrop for a final walk along the quay.
The clear winter air in Jesenice provides breathtaking views all the way to the islands in the morning. The sun hangs low over the deserted alleys of Staro Selo. At noon, the warmth of the konoba beckons. In the off-season, it is particularly quiet here, and locals have time for a short chat over a bowl of soup. In the afternoon, the coastal walk is invigorating. The 'Bura' wind can blow strongly, but the intense blue of the sea compensates for the cold. The early evening brings an intense sunset. As early as 4:30 PM, the sky over the Adriatic turns into bright orange and violet.
This bike tour combines the flat coastal road with a challenging climb to the old mountain village. In the morning, enjoy a relaxed ride along the sea to Mutogras beach. Then comes the athletic part: the climb to Staro Selo Jesenice. Your reward is a swift descent to the harbor of Krilo, where you can end the day among traditional wooden ships.
The morning calls for good rain gear for the ride along the coast to Mutogras. The streets are emptier, but caution is needed with puddles. Thanks to the effort of climbing up to the village, you stay warm despite the rain. The viewpoints in the clouds seem almost otherworldly. At noon, Staro Selo is a quiet place where the patter of rain on the old roofs is the only music. The bike can be parked under eaves. In the afternoon at Luka Krilo harbor, there's a brief breathing space. A hot coffee in the dry prepares you for the short ride back.
The winter morning offers perfect conditions for a coastal tour, as long as the Bura isn't blowing too hard. The light on the sea is unique in December. The climb to Staro Selo is a good exercise to ward off the cold. Once at the top, the crystal-clear view of Brač island rewards every effort. In the afternoon, Krilo harbor is almost deserted. The bike can easily be parked anywhere while you linger briefly on the shore. The day is best finished in one of the cafés along the Riva. The sunset is brief, but the colors are most intense in winter.
By car, you can easily reach the two contrasting parts of Jesenice. First, explore the historic mountain village of Staro Selo and the Church of St. Nicholas. Then, head down to the coast to the harbor of Krilo and finally to the relaxing Mutogras beach. Short driving times leave plenty of room for long swim breaks and a hearty meal.
The car is the ideal retreat during rain for a tour through Jesenice. In the morning, you head up to Staro Selo staying dry, listening to the rain drumming on the car roof. The short distances between the church and the harbor are easily bridged. A cozy lunch awaits in the konoba right by the harbor parking lot. In the afternoon, the car provides shelter while watching the stormy Adriatic from the coastal road. Mutogras beach looks almost like a black-and-white painting through the window. The evening concludes with a coffee on the Riva before heading back in the dry car. The harbor lights reflect in the puddles on the asphalt.
On a clear winter morning, the drive up to Jesenice is an experience in itself. The sun glistens on the frosty roofs of Staro Selo. At noon, parking at the harbor is easy. The local konoba offers warm dishes that can be enjoyed without a reservation during the quiet off-season. In the afternoon, the tour continues along the coast, where the low sun turns the sea into liquid silver. The car keeps the cold wind at bay. The sunset is the highlight of the day in winter. At exactly 4:30 PM, the best photo spots can be found right by the road without having to leave the car.
