Cesarica is located in a photogenic bay on the Velebit Channel, just a few kilometers from Karlobag. The place is a paradise for divers and snorkelers, as the sea here is particularly clean and slightly cooler due to freshwater springs (vrulje) coming from the Velebit mountain. There are no large hotels, which preserves the intimate atmosphere of the village. The history of Cesarica is shaped by the hard life between the mountain and the sea. Inhabitants were traditionally fishermen and sailors. The small church of St. Jelena testifies to the deep roots of the community in faith. During the summer months, the village is enlivened by holiday home owners who appreciate the seclusion. Culinary-wise, Cesarica provides the best of both worlds: freshly caught fish from the Adriatic and meat specialties from Velebit. Grilled calamari or lamb on the spit are highly recommended. Local herbs gathered on the mountain give the dishes a unique aroma. A glass of homemade herbal brandy (travarica) rounds off the meal. Access is via the famous Jadranska Magistrala coastal road. Hikers can use paths directly from the village into the Velebit Nature Park, from where there is a dramatic view of the islands of Pag and Rab. Cesarica is the great place for people who want to experience authentic Croatia without mass tourism.
