💡 Tips
- Visit the Benkovac Fair on the 10th of every month for one of the most authentic and traditional market experiences in Croatia.
- Look out for 'Bunja' stone shelters in the fields, which were traditionally used by shepherds for protection against the elements.
- Be prepared for the Bura wind; this strong north-easterly can bring a sudden chill even during the summer months.
- A car is essential for Bruška as public transport to the rugged Bukovica hinterland is very limited.
- Buy products directly from locals if you see 'domaće' (homemade) signs outside their stone houses.
🍽 Food
Typically prepared 'na ražnju' (on a spit) or 'pod pekom', the meat is flavored by the wild herbs the sheep graze on.
Sample the award-winning Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon from the nearby rocky Korlat vineyards.
A hard, flavorful cheese produced by local households, often served with olives and pršut.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy everything from local honey and olive oil to traditional wooden tools and crafts.
Look for 'travarica' (herb brandy) or fig brandy sold directly by families in the village.
A staple of the Ravni Kotari region; look for strings of dried figs at local stalls.
A beautiful 12-arch stone bridge on the Krupa river, tucked away in a serene and silent valley.
Visit the Pariževačka Glavica viewpoint for memorable views of the canyon without the rafting crowds.
Hike the rocky trails directly behind the village for absolute solitude and great island views.

Bruška is located in the heart of Bukovica, a historical region in the Zadar hinterland, near the town of Benkovac. The village is a prime example of human adaptation to the barren karst landscape. The architecture is characterized by dry stone walls and massive stone houses built to protect against the strong Bura wind. The local economy was traditionally based on sheep and goat farming, as well as the collection of medicinal herbs that thrive aromatically in this clean environment. Today, hikers discover the untouched nature of the area, marked by wide limestone plateaus and hidden sinkholes. A special feature of Bruška is the preservation of ancient customs and songs, such as Ojkanje, which is part of UNESCO's intangible heritage. Culinary specialties of the region include spicy sheep cheese and meat prepared under the Peka bell. Despite its remoteness, the village features a deep insight into the original life of Dalmatia.
