Zanaga is an important administrative town in the Lékoumou Department of southwestern Republic of Congo, gaining international prominence for hosting one of the world's largest unexploited iron ore deposits. The town is situated in the hilly highlands of the Mayombe massif, a landscape characterized by dense equatorial forests and steep river valleys. Geographically, Zanaga serves as the headquarters of its eponymous district and is the focal point of the Zanaga Iron Ore Project, a venture with the potential to fundamentally reshape the nation's economic landscape. Beyond the mining sector, the local population is traditionally engaged in subsistence farming and small-scale trade, with the Ogooué River basin to the north forming a natural boundary for the region. The development of the local mines necessitates massive infrastructure investments, including proposed railway links to the Atlantic coast, making Zanaga a hub for international strategic interest.
