Foping National Nature Reserve (China)

Weather…

Foping National Nature Reserve, located in the Qinling Mountains of Shaanxi Province, is a crucial sanctuary for the survival of the giant panda. Established in 1978, the reserve is distinguished by having the highest density of wild giant pandas per square kilometer in China. It is the primary habitat for the unique Qinling subspecies, which differs from its Sichuan relatives by its smaller skull and occasionally brownish fur. A major scientific sensation occurred here in 1985 with the discovery of Dan-Dan, the first recorded brown-and-white panda. The reserve spans altitudes between 980 and 2,904 meters, featuring dense mountain forests and bamboo groves that provide handy forage and shelter. Beyond pandas, Foping protects other rare fauna such as the Golden Takin, Golden Snub-nosed monkey, and the Chinese Giant Salamander. The area serves as a vital ecological corridor and a biodiversity hotspot at the transition zone between China's temperate and subtropical climates.
