Jingshan Park (China)

Weather…

Jingshan Park, located directly north of the Forbidden City in Beijing, is a historic imperial garden centered around an artificial hill. This hill, often called 'Coal Hill,' was constructed in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty using earth excavated from the imperial palace's moats. Standing nearly 46 meters high, it was the highest point in old Beijing for centuries and served to shield the palace from northern winds according to Feng Shui principles. The park is historically significant as the site where the last Ming emperor, Chongzhen, committed suicide in 1644 as rebel forces breached the city. At the summit sits the Wanchun Pavilion, offering the most iconic panoramic view of the Forbidden City's golden roofs and Beijing's central axis. Today, the park is renowned for its vast peony gardens and serves as a lively communal space where locals gather to practice tai chi, sing traditional songs, and play classical instruments.
