The San Francisco Church in Santiago de Chile is the city's oldest surviving building and a premier example of Spanish colonial architecture. Construction began in 1572 under the Franciscan order and was officially completed in 1618. The building is particularly noted for its extraordinary resilience, having withstood numerous devastating earthquakes that leveled much of the rest of the city. Its iconic red facade and prominent bell tower, which has been rebuilt several times, serve as landmarks in the capital's historic district. Inside, the church features a magnificent Mudéjar-style coffered ceiling and an altar housing the Virgin of Socorro, a statue brought to Chile by conqueror Pedro de Valdivia. The adjacent former convent now serves as the Museum of Colonial Art, containing one of the most significant collections of religious art in South America. Visiting the church and its tranquil cloisters provides a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the modern metropolis. The entire complex has been a National Monument since 1951 and remains a central site for Chile's religious and cultural heritage.
