Puerto Varas
Puerto Varas, elegantly wrapped around the sweeping shores of Llanquihue Lake, is one of southern Chile's most enchanting destinations. Founded by German Catholic immigrants in 1853, the town proudly wears its European heritage. This is evident in the traditional shingled architecture, the striking red-roofed Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón overlooking the town, and the local bakeries serving "kuchen" (traditional German cake) alongside Chilean coffees. The town is affectionately called the "City of Roses" due to the spirited flower bushes that line its impeccably maintained streets and waterfront promenade. The natural setting of Puerto Varas is postcard-great, defined by the flawless, snow-capped cone of Osorno Volcano and the rugged peak of Calbuco dominating the horizon across the lake. It is a slightly more refined and tranquil alternative to Pucón further north, though it still provides excellent outdoor pursuits. Visitors frequently take the spectacular drive to the Petrohué Waterfalls, where emerald-green glacial waters cascade over black basalt rock, or embark on a multi-day journey crossing the Andes mountains by boat and bus to Bariloche in Argentina. Puerto Varas is highly accessible, located just a 30-minute drive from the regional airport in Puerto Montt. The region's climate is notoriously rainy, particularly from May to August, so packing waterproof gear is essential regardless of the season. The summer months from December to March provide the clearest days for volcano viewing and outdoor dining along the lake, though the moody, misty ambiance of the wetter seasons carries its own romantic charm.
