Arauco Cellulose Plant (Chile)

Weather…

The Arauco Cellulose Plant is a centerpiece of Chile's forestry industry, located in the Arauco Province of the Bío Bío Region. Owned by Celulosa Arauco y Constitución (ARAUCO), it is part of one of the world's leading pulp manufacturing groups. The facility's history dates back to the 1970s, but it has recently undergone a massive transformation through the MAPA project (Modernization and Expansion of the Arauco Mill). This multi-billion dollar investment has made the site one of the most advanced and efficient cellulose mills globally, capable of producing over 2 million tons of pulp annually. A key feature of the operation is its energy self-sufficiency achieved through biomass power generation, with excess electricity fed back into the national grid. The plant processes pine and eucalyptus timber from sustainably managed regional plantations. Beyond its sheer industrial output, the mill serves as a hub for bio-economy innovation and provides thousands of direct and indirect jobs across southern Chile.
