Abéché is the fourth-largest city in Chad and the historic heart of the Ouaddaï region in the eastern part of the country. It was once the prestigious capital of the powerful Wadai Sultanate and a major hub for trans-Saharan caravan routes, dealing in ivory, salt, and other valuable commodities. Today, Abéché is a vital commercial center for livestock trade, particularly cattle, sheep, and camels raised by the region's nomadic populations. The city retains much of its traditional character, featuring narrow alleys, historic mosques, and the ruins of the former Sultan's palaces, which highlight its imperial past. It is also a significant educational center, home to the Adam Barka University, one of Chad's most important institutions of higher learning. Due to its strategic proximity to the Sudanese border, the city often serves as a key base for international humanitarian operations. The hot, dry Sahelian climate profoundly influences the local architecture and the daily rhythm of its residents.
