Lake Katam is one of the most visually striking bodies of water within the Ounianga Serir lake group in northern Chad. It is famous for its distinct coloration, which can appear as a deep red or orange hue due to the presence of specific salt-tolerant algae and microorganisms. Like its neighboring lakes, Katam is fed by underground fossil water from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer system, allowing it to persist in the extreme heat of the Sahara Desert. The lake is separated from other nearby water bodies by large sand dunes that are constantly shifted by the wind. Despite its high salinity, the lake plays a role in the local micro-ecosystem, supporting specialized insect and bird life. The contrast between the lively water and the surrounding golden sand dunes makes it a significant geological landmark. Scientific interest in Lake Katam often focuses on its extreme chemistry and the survival strategies of the organisms that inhabit its waters.
