Boali I Hydroelectric Station (Central African Republic)

Weather…

The Boali I Hydroelectric Station is the most significant piece of energy infrastructure in the Central African Republic, located at the impressive Boali Falls on the Mbali River. Situated approximately 95 kilometers northwest of Bangui, the station was constructed in the 1950s during French colonial rule to provide a reliable electricity supply to the capital. The facility harnesses the natural head of the waterfalls and has an installed capacity of about 8.75 megawatts. It is the heart of the national power grid and is operated by the state energy company, Enerca. Despite its age, Boali I remains the primary source of power for both industry and residential areas in Bangui. In recent years, rehabilitation projects supported by international aid have been launched to modernize the turbines and increase power generation efficiency. Its geographic location also makes the station a destination for regional tourism, as the falls themselves are a major natural attraction.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
The Boali I Hydroelectric Station is the first stage of the Boali cascade, reliably generating electricity from hydropower for decades. It is one of the most important energy sources of the Central African Republic.
🚪
Visiting
The power station is a sensitive infrastructure facility and usually not open to the public. The exterior view of the turbine houses and the weir can be seen from the riverbank.
👀
Where to view it
A well-suited spot is the bridge downstream, offering a view of the entire power plant and the waterfall. The hiking trail along the river also provides good perspectives.
🧺
Local products
No products are sold directly at the power station, but surrounding villages offer agricultural produce such as cassava, bananas, and maize. Charcoal and hand-woven baskets are also typical.
📆
Active season
Electricity generation is stable year-round, with production highest during the rainy season from May to October. Low water levels in the dry season may slightly reduce capacity.
Nearby
Visiting the power station can be combined with exploring the Boali Waterfalls, just a few hundred meters away. The capital Bangui, with its markets and museums, is also worth a day trip.
