Chinko Nature Reserve (Central African Republic)

Weather…

The Chinko Nature Reserve spans approximately 20,000 square kilometers and has been managed by the NGO African Parks in partnership with the government since 2014. The area is distinct because it is where the humid Congo Basin meets the drier savannas of the Sahel. This ecotone creates a complex mosaic of dense gallery forests and open grasslands, supporting wildlife such as leopards, African wild dogs, elephants, and various antelope species. Thanks to stringent anti-poaching operations and community engagement, wildlife populations have begun to recover in recent years. However, Chinko remains an extremely remote wilderness with no conventional tourism infrastructure. Research and conservation expeditions typically rely on bush planes for access. The extreme isolation and the logistical hurdles posed by seasonal flooding during the rainy season demand professional planning. For conservation enthusiasts, Chinko serves as a prime example of successful crisis management in wildlife protection.
