Ruins of the Sé Cathedral (Cape Verde)

Weather…

The ruins of the Sé Cathedral in Cidade Velha mark the site of what was once West Africa's largest church and the first cathedral in the tropics. Construction began in 1556, but due to financial difficulties and pirate raids, it was not fully completed until around 1700. The monumental building was designed as a symbol of Christian dominance in the region and served as the seat of the Diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde. In 1712, the cathedral was looted and heavily damaged during a devastating attack by the French fleet under Jacques Cassard, marking the beginning of its final decline. In subsequent decades, building materials were partially stripped for other constructions, leaving only the impressive foundation walls and pillar remnants visible today. Now, the ruins are a significant archaeological site where 2003 excavations revealed new insights into colonial ecclesiastical architecture.
