Historical site
Cidade Velha, formerly known as Ribeira Grande, was the first European colonial outpost in the tropics and served as the capital of Cape Verde until 1770. Founded in 1462 by Portuguese settlers on the southern coast of Santiago island, the city became a crucial transit point for the transatlantic slave trade between Africa and the Americas. Its strategic location and immense wealth attracted frequent attacks from pirates and rival European powers, most notably the English privateer Francis Drake in 1585. The settlement features a unique blend of 15th-century Portuguese military architecture and later colonial styles, earning it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2009. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of the once-grand Sé Cathedral, the Pillory, and the Royal Fortress of São Filipe, which collectively illustrate the complex history of colonization and trade.

Visiting
Cidade Velha, the historic core of Ribeira Grande, is a large open-air site. You can walk freely among the ruins, the fortress, and the cobbled streets.

The site is generally accessible at any time during the day as it is an open historic area. Some buildings like the museum may have restricted opening hours.

Photography is allowed throughout the site; the ruins and fortress provide excellent subjects. Watch out for the strong sun; a polarizing filter can be helpful.
