Cidade Velha, originally named Ribeira Grande, is the oldest permanent European settlement in the tropics and served as the first capital of Cape Verde. Founded in 1462, the town quickly became a central hub for the transatlantic slave trade and maritime routes connecting Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Its immense wealth attracted frequent pirate raids, most notably by Sir Francis Drake, leading to the construction of the Fortaleza Real de São Filipe in 1587. Today, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to significant ruins such as the Sé Cathedral and the 1512 Pelourinho (pillory), a lasting symbol of colonial justice. Geographically tucked away in a narrow valley on Santiago's southern coast, its access to fresh water facilitated early agricultural success. While Praia became the capital in 1770, Cidade Velha remains the historical and cultural soul of the archipelago, offering profound insights into the origins of Creole culture and the global maritime history.
