Monte Gordo (Cape Verde)

Weather…

Monte Gordo is the highest peak on the island of São Nicolau, rising to 1312 meters, and serves as the centerpiece of the Monte Gordo Natural Park. The massif is of critical ecological importance as its height allows it to capture moisture from trade wind clouds, creating a lush microclimate in an otherwise dry region. The Natural Park was established to safeguard the island's rich biodiversity, which includes over 30 endemic Cape Verdean plant species, most notably the rare Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco). Geologically an extinct volcano, its slopes have been traditionally used for agriculture, including coffee and maize cultivation. A well-developed network of trails enables hikers to experience distinct vegetation zones, ranging from humid mountain forests near the summit to xerophytic communities at lower elevations.
