Porto Inglês, now officially known as Cidade do Maio, is the capital of Maio island and a site of profound historical importance in Cape Verde. Founded in the 16th century, its original name ('English Port') stems from the British merchant vessels that frequented the harbor to load salt for export to Europe and the Americas. A significant architectural landmark is the 'Forte de São José,' built in the 18th century to defend the lucrative salt trade and the local population against pirate attacks. The town is characterized by its wide streets, colorful houses, and the imposing Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, which serves as a central focal point. Geographically situated on the southwest coast, Porto Inglês provides access to some of the longest and most pristine sandy beaches in the archipelago. Today, the local economy is driven by fishing, traditional salt pans, and a steady rise in tourism, all while maintaining a tranquil, community-oriented atmosphere.
