The Kribi Coastal Forest is a vital component of the Atlantic equatorial forest belt in southern Cameroon, lining the shores of the Océan department. This primary rainforest is unique due to its immediate proximity to the ocean, which generates a distinct microclimate and supports flora specifically adapted to saline coastal air. Historically, the forest has been the ancestral home of the indigenous Bagyeli Pygmies, whose profound ethnobotanical knowledge remains essential to the region's cultural identity. Biodiversity levels are remarkably high; the forest serves as a habitat for threatened megafauna, including forest elephants, western lowland gorillas, and chimpanzees, particularly in the corridors leading to the nearby Campo Ma'an National Park. Economically, the forest faces significant encroachment from the expansion of the Kribi deep-sea port and burgeoning tourism development. Current international conservation efforts are focused on reconciling industrial growth with the preservation of this sensitive coastal ecosystem.

Getting there

This unique forest meeting the sea is easily reached via coastal roads south of the main town of Kribi. Short dirt paths and sandy tracks branch off directly from the highway toward the shoreline canopy.

Best season

The dry seasons, roughly from November to March and a shorter break in July-August, are handy. The heavy tropical rains at other times can make the coastal trails extremely soggy and significantly increase mosquito populations.

Terrain & paths

You will traverse a beautiful transition zone of sandy beaches merging directly into thick, muddy tropical undergrowth. Expect flat but mixed terrain where dense mangrove roots and wet sand demand careful footing.

What to bring

Sandals or water shoes are first-rate for the beach, but lightweight, closed walking shoes are better for the actual forest trails. Strong insect repellent and high-factor sun cream are absolutely indispensable for this humid climate.

Informal parking is widely available near the popular beach spots or at local eco-lodges along the coast. Ensure you leave vehicles in populated areas or pay a modest fee for a local guard to watch over it.

The forest is relatively safe, but be cautious of falling coconuts, sudden coastal tidal changes, and biting ants in the undergrowth. Avoid wandering too deep into the untracked jungle alone without a local guide.
