Yeak Laom Lake

Yeak Laom Lake is a remarkable volcanic crater lake located in the heart of Ratanakiri Province in northeastern Cambodia. Formed approximately 4,000 years ago by a powerful volcanic eruption, the lake is celebrated for its nearly excellent circular shape and exceptionally clear, emerald-colored waters. It spans about 800 meters in diameter and reaches depths of up to 50 meters. For the indigenous Tampuan people, the lake is a sacred site believed to be inhabited by powerful spirits, leading to deep cultural traditions and strict environmental management of the surrounding area. The perimeter is cloaked in lush tropical forest that serves as a habitat for diverse birdlife and exotic butterflies. Geographically, it sits on a high plateau characterized by fertile red volcanic soil. Today, Yeak Laom is a popular destination for eco-conscious swimming and relaxation, with tourism revenues managed directly by the local community to support village development and forest protection.
