The Mare de Dori is a significant seasonal lake located in the Sahel region of northern Burkina Faso, situated directly adjacent to the town of Dori. The extent of the water surface fluctuates considerably between the rainy season and the extreme dry season, making it a vital resource for both humans and livestock. In 2009, the lake was recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance due to its ecological significance. It serves as a critical stopover for numerous migratory bird species and maintains regional biodiversity in an arid environment. For the pastoralist communities of the Tuareg and Fulani in the Séno province, the lake represents the primary watering hole for their cattle herds. Historically, the presence of this water body enabled permanent settlement and trade in this strategically important border region. Current challenges facing the ecosystem include increasing siltation from wind erosion and the overexploitation of water reserves resulting from population growth.
