Bani is an architectural anomaly in the arid Sahel region of northern Burkina Faso. In 1986, a local visionary named El Hadj Mohamed directed the construction of seven elaborate mud-brick mosques, positioning the main grand mosque in the valley and six others on surrounding hills to represent a worshiper in prayer. The structures feature characteristic wooden spikes and intricately molded clay facades. The landscape is stark and dominated by sandy plains and rocky outcrops, reflecting the harsh Sahelian climate. Local infrastructure is minimal, with very few dining or accommodation options, making it a place to pass through rather than stay. Food in the area is basic, centered around millet and goat meat. Bani is located on the road between Dori and Ouagadougou, accessible by bush taxi or private vehicle. Given the high temperatures and lack of shade, visits are best planned for the cooler months of December and January. Travelers should check current security advisories for the Sahel region before planning a trip to this remote architectural site.
