Banfora Old Train Station (Burkina Faso)

Weather…

The Banfora Old Train Station, inaugurated on 1 July 1931, represents a key remnant of colonial railway infrastructure in southwestern Burkina Faso. Constructed by the French colonial administration as part of the Abidjan-Niger railway extension, the station building measures 45 meters in length and features a central clock tower rising 12 meters. Its design incorporates locally sourced laterite stone and timber, with a distinctive roof structure influenced by French colonial architecture of the period. The station handled up to 20,000 passengers annually during its peak in the 1950s, primarily transporting cash crops such as cotton, peanuts, and shea nuts from the fertile Comoé region. After rail service ceased in 1995 due to declining traffic and track deterioration, the station was abandoned. In 2010, it was listed as a national heritage site. Current restoration efforts aim to convert it into a railway museum, preserving original ticket windows, waiting rooms, and a 1940s steam locomotive parked on a siding.
