Northern Pirin Ridge (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The northern ridge of the Pirin Mountains in Bulgaria is the most rugged and spectacular part of the range, characterized by its sharp alpine peaks and deep glacial valleys. Geologically, the area is divided into a white marble section to the north and a darker granite section to the south. At the heart of this ridge stands Vihren (2914 m), the highest peak in Pirin and the third highest in the Balkan Peninsula. The landscape was heavily shaped by Pleistocene glaciers, leaving behind impressive cirques and over 180 crystal-clear glacial lakes. Most of this high-altitude terrain is part of the Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and ancient coniferous forests. The ridge is home to the Baykushev Pine, Bulgaria's oldest tree, estimated to be more than 1,300 years old. At the foot of the mountains, the town of Bansko has evolved into a premier international ski resort, blending modern facilities with traditional stone architecture. For experienced hikers, the Koncheto ridge gives a thrilling high-altitude traverse with panoramic views of the surrounding massifs.
