Trombetas Bauxite Mine (Brazil)

Weather…

The Trombetas Mine, situated on the banks of the Trombetas River in the state of Pará, is Brazil's largest bauxite mine and one of the most significant globally. Operated by Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN), a consortium of national and international companies, the mine has been in production since 1979. Bauxite, the essential raw material for aluminum production, is extracted here using open-pit mining from massive sedimentary layers of the Amazon Basin. The logistics represent a technical marvel: the ore is transported via a dedicated railway line to Porto Trombetas, from where it is shipped along the Amazon River to refineries and for export. As the mine is located in an ecologically sensitive area, MRN has developed comprehensive reforestation and biodiversity protection programs. Annual production exceeds 12 million tons, firmly establishing Brazil in the top tier of global aluminum suppliers. In addition to its economic importance, the mine secures the raw material and energy independence of the Brazilian aluminum industry.
