Marajó Island (Brazil)

Weather…

Marajó Island is located at the mouth of the Amazon River in the Brazilian state of Pará and is the largest coastal island in Brazil, covering about 40,100 square kilometers. It is a fluviomarine island, as it is surrounded by both the freshwater of the Amazon and the saltwater of the Atlantic Ocean. The island's geography is split into two distinct zones: the eastern part consists of open savannas, while the western part is dominated by dense tropical forests and wetlands. Historically, Marajó is famous for the pre-Columbian Marajoara culture, which thrived between 400 and 1400 AD and was renowned for its sophisticated ceramics. A unique feature of the island's modern culture is the massive presence of water buffaloes, originally introduced from Asia, which now serve as the main mode of transport and a key economic resource. The island's main hub is the town of Soure, known for its colonial architecture and proximity to extensive beaches. Due to its equatorial position, the climate is tropical, with a heavy rainy season from January to June that turns large parts of the savanna into lakes.

📅
Best season
The dry season, from June to December, is the most comfortable time to visit, as the wet season brings heavy persistent rains that can drastically flood roads and restrict travel across the island.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is predominantly flat, consisting of extensive green savannahs, dense mangrove forests, and wide sandy beaches. Roads between local towns can often be completely unpaved, sandy, and bumpy.

⚠️
Safety
The island is generally peaceful, but visitors should always be cautious when approaching the massive domestic water buffaloes. Be mindful of surprisingly strong tides on the ocean-facing remote beaches.
