Belém, the capital of the state of Pará, is located at the mouth of the Amazon River system on the shores of Guajará Bay. Founded on January 12, 1616, by the Portuguese as the Forte do Presépio, it served as a vital defensive outpost against English and French incursions into the Amazon basin. The city reached its peak of prosperity during the rubber boom of the late 19th century, an era of wealth that financed grand European-style architecture, including the neoclassical Theatro da Paz. Known as the 'Gateway to the Amazon', Belém remains a crucial distribution point for goods from the rainforest. Its most famous landmark is the Ver-o-Peso market, one of Latin America's oldest and largest open-air markets, established in 1627. Culturally, Belém is the setting for the Círio de Nazaré, one of the world's largest annual religious gatherings. The city is also a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, famous for unique indigenous flavors like açaí and tucupi.
