Forte do Presépio (Brazil)

Weather…

The Forte do Presépio, also known as Forte do Castelo, marks the birthplace of the city of Belém in 1616. It was established by Francisco Caldeira Castelo Branco to protect the mouth of the Amazon from Dutch and English invaders. The original wooden structure was later replaced by stone walls to increase defensive capabilities. Throughout the centuries, the fortress was the site of numerous conflicts, including the Cabanagem revolt in the 19th century. Today, the facility is part of the 'Feliz Lusitânia' historical complex and houses the Museum of the Encounter. The exhibition showcases archaeological finds from the region's indigenous peoples and military artifacts from the colonial era. From the fort's walls, visitors can enjoy an impressive view of Guajará Bay and the famous Ver-o-Peso market. The fortress is not only a military monument but also a symbol of cultural fusion in the Amazon region.
