Pirenópolis
Pirenópolis, located in the state of Goiás, is one of the best-preserved colonial towns in central Brazil. Established in 1727 as Meia Ponte during the regional gold rush, it quickly grew into a vital agricultural and mining hub. The town's architecture is a memorable display of white-walled houses with brightly colored window frames, typical of the Portuguese colonial influence in the Brazilian hinterland. Its central landmark, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, is the oldest and largest religious building in the state. Pirenópolis is famous nationwide for the Cavalhadas, a colorful medieval-style equestrian festival depicting battles between Moors and Christians held annually during the Feast of the Holy Spirit. Surrounded by the Serra dos Pireneus mountains, the area is also a major center for ecotourism, boasting numerous scenic waterfalls and hiking trails. The historic center was listed as a national heritage site in 1989, ensuring the protection of its cobblestone streets and colonial integrity. Today, it combines rich history with a thriving craft scene, particularly silver jewelry, and a sophisticated culinary reputation.
