Cathedral of Brasília (Brazil)

Weather…

The Cathedral of Brasília, officially Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida, is a masterpiece by architect Oscar Niemeyer. Inaugurated on May 31, 1970, the structure is distinguished by its hyperbolic design consisting of 16 curved concrete columns. These columns each weigh 90 tons and are intended to represent hands reaching up to heaven. The nave is located below ground level, giving the interior a unique lighting mood through the vast stained glass windows designed by Marianne Peretti. Inside, three angel statues by Alfredo Ceschiatti are suspended, lending the space an ethereal atmosphere. The cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of modernist architecture in Brasília and was declared national historic heritage in 1990. Despite its modern form, it preserves the spiritual tranquility of a traditional cathedral. The harmonious blend of glass, concrete, and light makes it one of the most photographed buildings in the Brazilian capital.
