Lencois (Brazil)

Weather…

Situated deep in the interior of Bahia, Lençóis owes its existence to the massive diamond rush of the mid-19th century. The wealth of that bygone era is still reflected in the perfectly preserved pastel colonial houses and cobbled streets, giving the town an undeniably romantic flair. Today, however, the settlement no longer attracts fortune seekers, but rather nature lovers and outdoor adventurers from around the world. Lençóis serves as the premier base camp for exploring the Chapada Diamantina, one of Brazil's most spectacular mountain ranges and national parks. Treks depart from here to explore wide-open tabletop mountains, deep canyons, underground limestone cave systems, and massive waterfalls like the Cachoeira da Fumaça, which drops over 340 meters. Even directly from the town center, visitors can take short hikes to the natural rock pools of Serrano, where the river water famously shimmers in a reddish hue. After a physically demanding day on the trails, the town comes alive in the evening. The narrow streets fill with outdoor tables, and local restaurants serve hearty regional cuisine accompanied by artisanal cachaça. While Lençóis has a small airport, most visitors arrive via a six-hour bus journey from Salvador. The cooler months between May and September offer the most comfortable temperatures for demanding hikes.
