Barra Lighthouse (Brazil)

Weather…

The Farol da Barra in Salvador, Bahia, is situated within the Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra at the entrance of All Saints Bay. The first beacon was installed as early as 1698, making it the oldest lighthouse on the American continent. The current 22-meter-high tower, with its characteristic black-and-white striped design, dates from 1839. The fort itself was constructed in the late 16th century to protect the capital of the colony at the time from pirates and hostile vessels. Today, the facility houses the Nautical Museum of Bahia, which displays a valuable collection of sea charts, navigation instruments, and archaeological finds from shipwrecks. The lighthouse is one of the most visited sites in Salvador, especially during sunset when locals and tourists gather on its grounds. It marks the transition between the open Atlantic Ocean and the calm waters of the bay. The architecture combines military strength with functional maritime history and is an iconic symbol of Bahian identity.
