Gate of the Sun (Bolivia)

Weather…

The Puerta del Sol, or Gate of the Sun, is an iconic monolithic structure created by the Tiwanaku culture in Bolivia. Carved from a single massive block of grey andesite, the gate weighs an estimated 10 tons. It is famous for its intricate low-relief carvings featuring a central figure often identified as the creator god Viracocha or the 'Staff God.' This central deity is flanked by 48 smaller winged figures interpreted as celestial messengers or shamans. Archaeological theories suggest the gate was originally part of a larger temple complex, likely the Kalasasaya, and served as an advanced solar calendar. The symbols and motifs may have marked significant dates for the agricultural cycles of the empire. The Gate of the Sun was rediscovered in the 19th century lying on the ground and broken in two; it was later re-erected in its current location. Today, it stands as a premier symbol of Andean indigenous identity and ancient astronomical knowledge.
