Glover's Reef is the southernmost of the three atolls in Belize, named after the 17th-century English pirates who once used it as a hideout. The oval-shaped atoll encloses a massive, shallow lagoon where over 800 small patch reefs rise up to the water's surface. This unique structure makes Glover's Reef one of the premier locations in the world for snorkeling and sea kayaking, as the lagoon functions like a giant, calm swimming pool protected from the open ocean waves by a continuous outer reef. The area was declared a Marine Reserve in 1993 and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The underwater ecosystem here is exceptionally intact. Divers exploring the sheer walls of the outer reef can encounter manta rays, hammerhead sharks, and large schools of snappers. The warm, shallow water of the lagoon is good for watching spotted eagle rays forage in the sand or observing bioluminescent organisms glowing at night. On the southeastern edge of the atoll lie five small sandy islands hosting tiny eco-lodges, research stations, and glamping tents for visitors. There are no mega-resorts here, only a laid-back, barefoot island lifestyle. Reaching Glover's Reef is a slight adventure, as the boat ride from Dangriga takes about an hour and a half to two hours. Many visitors book week-long adventure packages where they paddle kayaks from reef to reef daily and eat fresh-caught fish by a campfire in the evenings. The best time to enjoy the atoll is during the months from December to April, when trade winds provide a pleasant breeze under the tropical sun.
