Turneffe Atoll stretches 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, making it the largest of the three atolls in Belize. Unlike the other atolls, Turneffe is heavily vegetated with mangroves, creating a unique and complex ecosystem of shallow lagoons, seagrass beds, and deep reef walls. This network serves as a vital nursery for countless marine creatures, including endangered West Indian manatees, American crocodiles, and dolphins. The atoll was officially declared a Marine Reserve in 2012 to protect its rich biodiversity. For divers, the atoll has a massive variety of underwater landscapes. The western side features shallow, protected coral gardens, while the eastern side drops off into dramatic walls frequently patrolled by reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, and massive groupers. One of the most famous dive sites is 'The Elbow' at the southern tip, where strong ocean currents attract massive schools of spawning fish. Beyond diving, Turneffe is a premier global destination for catch-and-release fly fishing, specifically targeting bonefish, permit, and tarpon. Accommodations on the atoll range from dedicated rustic fishing lodges to exclusive dive resorts, reachable by a 90-minute boat ride from Belize City. The dry months from February to May provide the best weather conditions for spending long days on the water. Food enthusiasts can enjoy fresh Caribbean catches in the evenings, traditionally prepared with local spices and coconut rice.
