San Ignacio is the administrative capital of the Cayo District, located along the banks of the Macal River in western Belize. Together with its twin town Santa Elena, it constitutes the second-largest urban area in the country. The town serves as a primary gateway for ecotourism and archaeological exploration, providing close access to major Maya ruins such as Xunantunich and Cahal Pech. A notable engineering landmark is the Hawkesworth Bridge, the only suspension bridge in Belize, which was completed in 1949. San Ignacio is celebrated for its lively atmosphere, diverse weekly market, and multicultural community including Mestizo, Creole, and Mennonite populations.
