Hol Chan Marine Reserve (Belize)

Weather…

The Hol Chan Marine Reserve was established in 1987 and is the oldest marine protected area in Belize. It is located near the southern tip of Ambergris Caye and covers an area of approximately 18 square kilometers. The name 'Hol Chan' means 'small channel' in the Maya language, referring to a natural break in the barrier reef that serves as a passage for marine life. The reserve is divided into four zones, of which Zone A (the coral reef) and Zone D (Shark Ray Alley) are particularly popular with snorkelers and divers. Shark Ray Alley is world-renowned for the high density of nurse sharks and stingrays that can be observed here in shallow water. Strict protection regulations have led to an exceptional recovery of fish populations and coral reefs in this area. It is considered one of the most successful examples of marine resource management in the Caribbean and is an integral part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System.
