Half Moon Caye
Half Moon Caye is an exceptional natural reserve located at the southeastern corner of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll. The island is naturally divided: the eastern half features a dense ziricote forest that serves as a massive, protected nesting colony for red-footed boobies and magnificent frigatebirds. An observation platform built into the forest canopy allows visitors to watch fluffy white chicks and courting birds at eye level. The western side of the island, in contrast, has an excellent, crescent-shaped white sand beach where sea turtles can nest undisturbed. Beneath the water's surface, Half Moon Caye is a true mecca for divers. The Half Moon Caye Wall is widely considered one of the best dive sites in the Caribbean. At a depth of about 40 feet, the reef drops off dramatically, plunging almost vertically into the dark ocean abyss. The cliff wall is heavily encrusted with massive sponges, sea fans, and anemones, patrolled by reef sharks and giant groupers. For snorkelers, the shallow, sandy lagoon right off the beach provides well-suited conditions for spotting juvenile stingrays and colorful reef fish. Due to its extreme isolation, Half Moon Caye is mostly visited as part of day tours from Belize City or from liveaboard dive boats. There are no hotels on the island, but the Belize Audubon Society maintains a basic campsite for adventurous travelers wishing to sleep under the stars. The months of March and April are particularly appealing for a visit, as the bird chicks are hatching and the weather is stable for smooth boat crossings.
