St. Peter's Church (Belgium)

Weather…

St. Peter's Church in Leuven is a premier example of Brabantine Gothic architecture, built primarily in the 15th century over the foundations of an earlier Romanesque church. Located on the Grote Markt, directly across from the ornate Town Hall, it serves as the city's religious focal point. A defining characteristic of the church is its unfinished western facade; original plans called for three massive towers, the tallest of which was to reach 170 meters, but soil instability halted their completion. Today, the church functions as a museum of sacred art, housing Dirk Bouts’ masterpiece, the 'Last Supper' triptych, a cornerstone of Flemish painting. The interior is noted for its soaring, light-filled nave and an intricately carved stone rood screen from 1488. In 1999, the church’s belfry was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Belfries of Belgium and France. This monument remains a vital cultural and spiritual landmark, illustrating the artistic prosperity of late medieval Leuven.
