Castle of Horst (Belgium)

Weather…

Horst Castle, positioned in the municipality of Holsbeek, is a quintessentially Flemish moated castle that dates back to the 14th century. Its most prominent feature is the massive square keep, or donjon, built in 1363, which remains one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in Belgium. During the mid-17th century, under the ownership of Maria-Anna van den Tympel, the castle underwent significant interior renovations, most notably the addition of exquisite stucco ceilings by Jan Christian Hansche. These ceilings, depicting mythological and hunting scenes, are considered among the finest in the country. Uniquely, the castle was never modernized in later centuries, allowing it to retain an authentic atmosphere of medieval and Baroque transition. It also holds a special place in Belgian popular culture as the home of the 'Red Knight' (De Rode Ridder) in the famous comic book series by Willy Vandersteen. Surrounded by tranquil waters and lush woodlands, the site remains a major historical landmark in the province of Flemish Brabant.
