The Atomium is Brussels' most iconic modern landmark and a powerful symbol of the scientific optimism and boundless faith in progress that characterized the post-war era. Designed by engineer André Waterkeyn for the 1958 World Expo (Expo 58), this futuristic structure depicts the elementary cell of an iron crystal magnified a staggering 165 billion times. The impressive edifice consists of nine massive spheres, now clad in stainless steel, which are connected by thick tubes containing escalators and elevators. Originally intended to be a temporary installation lasting only the six months of the exhibition, its overwhelming popularity ensured its permanent survival. Today, visitors can explore several of the interconnected spheres, which host permanent and temporary exhibitions covering the history of the building, science, and modern design. The uppermost sphere, located at a height of over 100 meters, features a spectacular panoramic restaurant and observation deck, offering wide-open, uninterrupted views across the Belgian capital and its surroundings.
