The Cinquantenaire Arch (Arcade du Cinquantenaire) in Brussels is a monumental triumphal arch conceived to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence. Although construction began in 1880 under King Leopold II, the current triple-arched structure was not completed until 1905, in time for the 75th anniversary. Designed by Gédéon Bordiau and later finished by Charles Girault, the monument is built of iron, glass, and stone. It is topped by a magnificent bronze quadriga, created by Thomas Vinçotte and Jules Lagae, representing the province of Brabant raising the Belgian national flag. The arch forms the centerpiece of the Cinquantenaire Park and connects two horseshoe-shaped gallery wings that today house major institutions like the Royal Military Museum and Autoworld. Its architecture embodies the imperial confidence of Belgium at the turn of the 20th century and stands as a primary landmark in the capital. Visitors can access the terrace atop the arch via the museums, offering one of the best panoramic views of Brussels.
