Awali is a small municipality in the center of Bahrain that is significantly different from the country's other towns. It was founded in the 1930s by the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) as a residential area for its expatriate employees. The town is known for its quiet, green, and well-ordered environment, reminiscent of a British or American suburb. The streets are named after trees and birds, and the architecture consists mainly of colonial-style bungalows and villas. Awali is a self-contained community with its own facilities, such as a hospital, schools, a cinema, and sports clubs. It has a unique, almost surreal atmosphere in contrast to the surrounding desert landscape. Although originally built for expats, many Bahraini families also live in Awali today. The town is a living monument to the history of the oil industry in Bahrain.
