Tsitsernakaberd (Armenia)

Weather…

Tsitsernakaberd is the official memorial dedicated to the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, located on a hill overlooking Yerevan. Completed in 1967, the complex serves as a profound site of mourning and remembrance for Armenians worldwide. It features a 44-meter-high split stele, which symbolizes the rebirth of the Armenian people. Adjacent to it, twelve tilted stone slabs form a circle around an eternal flame, representing the twelve lost provinces of Western Armenia. Every year on April 24th, hundreds of thousands of people gather here to place flowers at the flame in silent tribute. The site also houses the underground Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute, which provides a moving and detailed documentation of the historical events. The name 'Tsitsernakaberd' translates to 'swallow's fortress' and refers to the hill's ancient name. The memorial gives a wide view of the city and the sacred Mount Ararat.
